Kate's Journey · Mystery · short story

The Journey

In a little town called Starlight, lived a girl named Kate and her parents. Kate was only six years old, but she was happy and playful doing all the things that six-year-olds love to do from riding her bike in the park, jumping rope, or climbing trees in her backyard The town where they lived wasn’t very big, but Kate didn’t seem to care after all she had her family and friends to do things with.
Every Morning Kate would get up early just to go walking with her dad before she went to school. She would say to her dad “Hey slowpoke come on.” Her dad didn’t mind the name he just laughed it off.
When she got to school, she went straight to her desk to sit down. The teacher handed each of the children a piece of paper and told them to write what is called a “Wish List” which were things that they wanted, stuff that they would like to do, or places they would like to go. Kate was excited that she started right away. Her wishes were for her family to have a better house to live in, to go to the Mall, Science Center, Museum, Toys-R-Us, and to see the Arch. The last two wishes were places that she would like to go like St. Louis or New Mexico.
After school was over, she ran home to show the list to her parents. She then ate supper and went to bed. She had trouble sleeping, still wondering about all the things on her list.
The very next morning, Kate got up, ate breakfast, got dressed, and walked to the bus stop to catch the bus. The bus stop wasn’t very far from where Kate lived, so her parents didn’t worry about her walking by herself. Besides, it was a small town where everyone knew her and looked out for her. Little did she or anyone know what was to become of her?
As Kate was still waiting for the bus to come, she came across a man walking his dog. She ran to see if the man and dog were alright. She walked closer to the dog, bent down to pet him. That’s when the man got up, put something over her mouth, and walked off with her. She tried to run away, but it was no use, She kicked and wiggled, but it still did no good.
Her parents got worried wondering what happened to their little girl when 4:00 came and she didn’t come home from school.Nobody knew where Kate was and her parents by this time were calling the police and searching the whole town for her.
Months went by, and still no sign of Kate, their daughter had been missing for months without a trace on how to find her. All left behind were drawings of St. Louis. When the police went to St. Louis, to find her, they came up empty. Every place that Kate went to, she drew a picture of it and what she did while she was there. They kept following the drawings until they came across the last place she drew, which wasThe St. Louis Arch. When they got to the Arch, she was nowhere to be found. They looked all around calling her name, but there no answer. Just as they were about to leave, they heard a voice “Hey slowpoke catch me if you can.” The voice was Kate, and she was alright. Kate was then brought back home to her parents.
When she was asked about how she got all the way to St. Louis she replied “The man got me there but I left to go see the Arch” As the school year was coming to an end,Kate wondered what it would be like to not just visit a place like St. Louis, but also live there?
To many people, it would have been scary to be taken away from our parents and brought to a place that we didn’t know. But to Kate, it was an exciting journey filled with new and wonderful treasures to explore, and that is an adventure that she will never ever forget!
